I consider myself a pretty active, outdoorsy person who loves a good adventure, so when I had the chance to visit one of the largest caves in the world in a remote part of Borneo – which also happens to be a real life Batcave home to millions of bats – I was all for it. Not surprisingly, the cave didn’t remotely resemble a superhero’s headquarters, and with a broken headlamp and inadequate footwear, I slipped and stumbled my way through complete darkness, in 40+ degree heat, surrounded by cave-dwelling spiders and virtual mountains of guano. Needless to say, when I emerged out the other side covered head-to-toe in the stuff, as well as dozens of scrapes and bruises, I’d learned a valuable lesson that I do, in fact, have a threshold of adventure. I can now strike caving off my bucket list… in permanent marker.
