I was in Cuba on vacation when the island was hit with a category 5 hurricane. I was in Santa Clara, far from any airport. I got a ride to Cienfuegos in a ’53 Pontiac that had no door panels and one window winder that would be passed from person to person to raise and lower windows. I spent four hours in that car, driving down country roads and navigating around downed trees. At Cienfuegos we discovered that the airport was closed due to hurricane damage. So then we drove to Varadero – same car, same drill. After a total of twelve hours in that car, I made my flight with about fifteen minutes to spare.
