Finance Manager/Executive Assistant
I first came to Canada in 1998 and barely a month in the city, my son and I were caught jaywalking! We were on our way to his daycare and were crossing the street when all of a sudden we heard a siren. The police stopped us and told us our “crime.” I told the officer that we were new in the country and thought it was okay to cross. He asked for my SIN number and went back to the car. My son kept asking if we would go to jail and I said no, but deep inside I was so scared I wanted to cry! What if jaywalking merits jail time in Canada? When the officer returned he had decided that I was telling the truth about being “new and ignorant,” and let us go.
