How many waves do you need to catch to have “surfed in Japan”? I trekked south on a recent trip to Japan to a small surf town called Kamakura. I rented all my gear, and waited at the crosswalk to cross the road to the ocean. A local with limited english skills said “you no walky, Akaei!” Seeing as how my Japanese was worse than his English I had no idea what that meant but it sounded like a warning. After some broken Japanese, many hand gestures and a simple drawing on the side of his car, I now know that Akaei translates to “STING RAY: STEVE IRWIN-KILLING STING RAY.” Needless to say, the number of terrifying waves you need to catch to have “surfed in Japan” is only one.
